North Cornwall Dragons Coaching Team
COACHING TEAM Bios:
Head Coach: Helen Tooley
Head Coach Helen Tooley joined Wadebridge Swim Team in 2011 and comes with over 30 years coaching experience. After a year in her first serious coaching position as D squad coach at Ealing Swim Club, and still a teenager herself, Helen was part of the coaching team that took their swimmers to the final of the National Milton Keynes Junior League … and won!
Those intial years of coaching under the expertise of Eallings Head Coach Laurie Dormer and Shirley Halcox were invaluable to Helen and she soon gained ASA teaching and coaching awards. A few years later, after a comprehensive apprenticeship she found myself in the position of Head Coach of Ealing Swim Team where she was lucky enough to work with some committed swimmers who helped to make a great team. She also took the team on several domestic and international training camps, her favourite of which was to Sarasota, Florida.
This Gulf Coast location also happened to be the home of Sarasota YMCA Sharks swim team and in the early 90’s helen took up a position as an assistant senior coach with the team where she coached some exceptional swimmers who wer Y State Champions, YMCA national champions and included several NCAA champions and qualifiers. Staying with the heat, Helen’s next position involved a short stay in Malta as Head Coach of St Julian’s swim team and then it was back to England in the mid 90’s where she became Head Coach of Staines Swimming Club.
The set up at Staines was pretty much what we have at Wadebridge by way of numbers and pool time and it is Helen’s intention to do as well at WASC as she did there with swimmers reaching their swimming potential whether entering club championships or gaining medals at National Age Groups and Senior National Championships.
The last coaching position she held before coming to Cornwall was as a part time assistant coach back at Ealing under Head Coach and GB/Olympic coach, Dave Heathcock . With the reduced hours she combined coaching with landscape designing including many celebrity clients based in West London, and her love of painting and sculpture.
Helen holds the British qualification of ASA club coach and the American qualification, ASCA Level 4.
